Natural cotton orthopedic corset, lining of obituaries published in the newspaper [2020-2021] and metal buckets, 2022

Obituary is part of Body Sculptures [Linings], 2020 – ongoing. A series of garments chosen for their historical and semantic significance, reimagined in contemporary materials and lined with clippings and texts selected from printed newspapers. The piece is patterned after a 19th-century French women's corset for posture correction. It is made in contrast to the lining of the inner part, assembled with obituaries clipped from 2020 newspapers. These body sculptures are designed to be displayed as chrysalides of invisible, unrepresented characters. Creating a haute couture garment with paper required the advice of master seamstress Lourdes López.
